We are taking a slew of measures for a clean and green Kolkata and the merger of the three sections will speed up work in this regard,” Hakim said. The Mayor has already held meetings with the Railways and the Kolkata Port Trust, which is the custodian of a reasonable amount of land in the city. “We have proposed to them to allow us to take up plantation in vacant lands which they would not use for any commercial purpose. There is vacant land in areas like Majerhat that is owned by the Railways. There is also vacant land of KoPT in areas like Kidderpore and the Nimtala riverside area in North Kolkata. They can take up plantation on their own if they wish or can allow us to take a similar initiative,” he added. The KMC will also take opinion from experts to ensure planned and scientific plantation. “Plantation will be based upon the conditions of a particular area and there will be no haphazard planting of trees,” the Mayor said.
